Honoring Good Deeds Program
In September, 2021, Keeping Our Girls Safe added a new program that gives back to the first responders and their families within our community called the Honoring Good Deeds Program. A Critical Incident Stress Management Team (CISM) was created.
Background: When Sierah went missing first responders from all over the State of Ohio came to help organize searches and assist the Fulton County Sheriff's Department in any way they could. With one of our co-founders being a retired police officer and one currently a paramedic - we knew from the start - we at KOGS wanted to give back to these Heros. With all that being said, the CISM Team was instituted in 2021.
What is the Honoring Good Deeds Program? It is a program to train volunteer, peer to peer support team members of public safety and affiliate professionals serving regional EMS, fire, law enforcement and other organizations involved in any type of critical incident. Our team name is 4-County Community Crisis & Peer Support Team and as of September 1, 2022 has 24 members. We follow the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation's format for delivering services.
During times of critical incidents, the normal coping mechanisms most people rely upon on - on a daily basis - are stretched to their limits. It is not uncommon for the situation to be so overwhelming that even a well trained individual may not recognize that they are being affected by the incident. CISM was developed, and has evolved, to a process that helps people be resistant, be resilient, and recover from critical incident stress.
The 4-County Community Crisis & Peer Support Team can be called after critical incidents when the following occur: (a team should be considered earlier rather than later after an event) Line of duty death/death of a worker; serious injury of co-worker; suicide; multi-casualty incidents; use of force resulting in death or injury; death or violence to a child; prolonged event with negative outcome; incidents with extensive media attention; incidents where responders know the victim; incidents charged with profound emotion.
Confidentiality:
Services provided are strictly confidential.
The 4-County Community Crisis & Peer Support Team is registered with the Ohio CISM Network, and is covered by ORC 2317.02 K1 for protected speech.
Team Services:
Pre-Incident Stress Management Education - information about stress identification, coping skills, and resources will be shared;
Defusing - used to quickly lower anxiety & stress in the immediacy after an incident, usually within the first few hours of an incident
Critical Incident Stress Debriefing - Held 48-72 hours after an incident or after a significant development in an incident;
Individual Peer Support - held when there are one or two people impacted by an incident, can be accomplished over the phone also;
Follow-Up/Referral - All CISM responses result in follow-up contact from the team leader or an assigned team member;
Pastoral/Chaplain Care - some incidents result in testing of religious values & beliefs; a special subgoup of CISM team members provide Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care, if requested.
Accessing the Team:
The team will only respond if invited to an incident by someone in authority (OIC/CEO); the team will NOT self dispatch to any incident; 24/7 phone 1-800-367-6524 OR 419-388-3548 will be answered and a CISM team member will return the call within 15 minutes of the call to the team; team response is done without charge (NO COST) to the organization or individuals.
